Statement on the current water outage
14h00 - 12 Aug 2013
My thanks (and sympathies) to all who are coping so well with the current water outage. The following residences have had no water since Tuesday last week: Chris Hani; Cullen Bowles; Rosa Parks; Calata; MargaretSmith; Amina Cachalia; Ellen Kuzwayo; Joe Slovo; Centenary; Dingemans; Livingstone.
Prospects are that the repairs will be completed by mid-Tuesday, which means that pumping would begin thereafter … with a probable further delay until full pressure is reached.
All arrangements regarding drinking water, basic toilet flushing and sanitation are being coordinated by Residential Operations – and we are very grateful for their efforts and hard work behind the scenes.
As regards showering and laundry: some sharing and goodwill amongst residences is already evident – please continue with whatever works for you (there has been not time for consultation). But we need to formalise this as well, to ensure that every student feels welcome.
The following residences ‘pairings’ (for laundry and showers) will apply from this afternoon: please can wardens re-arrange their laundry schedules to make room for these students, some of whom have no clean clothing left:
Chris Hani – Piet Retief;
Cullen Bowles -Goldfields
Rosa Parks –Ruth First
Calata –Stanley Kidd
MargaretSmith -Wlaker
Amina Cachalia – Pringle
Ellen Kuzwayo – Victoria Mxenge
Joe Slovo –de Beers
Centenary – Guy Butler
Dingemans - Hobson
Livingstone - Milner
Thanks again to everyone who is doing their bit to make life bearable for those without a water supply.
PS: Today, the formal approval was given for the installation of 40 more tanks: 20 for residences and 20 for campus in general.
