CAPE TOWN – Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande is today expected to announce by how much university fees will be hiked for the 2017 academic year.
It has many tertiary education institutions on edge as students protests could erupt again.
At the same time, all academic activities at the University of Cape Town have suspended for today.
The decision follows protests last week stemming from disciplinary action which is being taken against three students.
Stellenbosch University, meanwhile, says all lectures and tests will go ahead as planned today.
There were protests and skirmishes with security officials on both campuses last week as students mobilise ahead of an imminent announcement about fee increases for next year.
UCT says it consulted before deciding to suspend academic proceedings for today.
UCT spokesperson, Elijah Mohololo says precautionary steps have been taken as they anticipate an announcement about 2017 university fees today.
Health faculty students at hospitals and providing other clinical services have been asked to continue working.
UCT vice chancellor Dr Max Price is expected to issue a statement later today.
