Allegations have been made by a female student from Wits University against one of the private security guards hired by the university.
According to reports, a private security guard allegedly told the student that if rape was legal he would rape her, which led to the student filing charges against the guard.
The report from Mi Campus online magazine alleged that: “A great number of female students are not happy with the presence of private security guards on campus due to the growing trend of cat-calling and sexual harassment carried out by the security guards employed by the Wits University Management”
The Law student alleges that she was on her way to the New Commerce Law Building when the security guard harassed her as she was passing him by.
Senior communications officer from the university Kemantha Govender said that the university treated allegations of sexual harassment extremely seriously. “All allegations of sexual harassment should be reported to the Gender Equity Office immediately. In terms of the University’s Sexual Harassment Policies, the Gender Equity Office is well equipped to investigate any complaint of sexual harassment in line with the University’s rules, policies and procedures,” she concluded.
