Building on the outcomes of the 2023 ISTIC–NRF Consultative Meeting in Gqeberha, South Africa, the workshop marked a shift from strategic dialogue to action-oriented collaboration. It focused on strengthening science, technology, and innovation partnerships in the priority areas of water security, renewable energy, and health and human well-being, reflecting shared sustainability challenges and development priorities across the Global South.
The workshop brought together researchers, policymakers, funding agencies, and institutional leaders from South Africa and Malaysia, fostering a transdisciplinary exchange linking scientific knowledge, policy processes, and societal needs. Participants emphasised the importance of South–South Cooperation principles, including mutual learning, equity, and shared benefit, as the foundation for sustained collaboration.
High-level opening remarks highlighted the strategic value of STI-led cooperation within the bilateral relationship. A key milestone of the workshop was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Research Foundation of South Africa and ISTIC, reaffirming institutional commitment to long-term partnership and joint programme development.
Discussions across thematic sessions identified converging research priorities, common knowledge gaps, and opportunities for collaborative initiatives. Participants underscored the need for integrated, systems-based approaches and the co-production of policy-relevant knowledge. Capacity building, particularly for early-career researchers through exchanges, training, and mentorship, was recognised as a cross-cutting priority.
The workshop concluded with agreement on the development of a draft collaboration roadmap outlining priority research areas, indicative timelines, and roles for implementation and follow-up. These outcomes will inform deliberations of the Malaysia–South Africa Joint Committee Meeting and guide future bilateral STI cooperation. Collectively, ISTIC, NRF, and FEAHLC reaffirmed their commitment to translating strategic engagement into sustained, impactful partnerships that advance sustainable development across the Global South.
