The workshop was designed to align regional initiatives with the overarching mission and goals of the Future Earth Africa Hub and Leadership Centre, ensuring a unified approach to addressing Africa’s pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. By equipping newly established Regional Nodes with the necessary tools, insights, and networks, the workshop aimed to empower Nodes to drive transformative change in their respective regions, contributing to a sustainable and resilient future for Africa.


Participants were provided with a comprehensive overview of the Future Earth mission, goals, and strategic framework. This included detailed insights into the governance structure, roles, and planned activities of the Africa Hub and Leadership Centre. The discussions emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and science-policy engagement in addressing Africa's sustainability challenges. The workshop featured in-depth presentations and discussions on the Regional Nodes’ terms of reference, operational guidelines, roles, and responsibilities. Participants explored strategies for ensuring the effective functioning of the Nodes, including funding mechanisms and long-term sustainability. This session was critical in clarifying expectations and fostering a shared understanding of the Nodes' contributions to the broader Future Earth agenda.


The workshop served as a platform for capacity building, offering participants practical tools and methodologies to enhance their regional initiatives. Interactive sessions facilitated knowledge sharing and collaboration among Regional Node Directors, Sustainability Science Cluster leads, and postdoctoral fellows. These discussions also highlighted opportunities for leveraging local and global networks to amplify impact. A central theme of the workshop was the collective vision of a sustainable and resilient Africa. Participants engaged in strategic discussions on how the Regional Nodes can contribute to this vision by addressing pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. Case studies and best practices from different regions were shared, inspiring innovative approaches to sustainability.
