The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to advancing climate science, promoting policy-relevant research, and driving innovation in sustainability practices. Below are some of the key collaborative Initiatives deliberated on:

  1.  Development of "10 Insights on Climate Sciences" with an Africa-Specific Adaptation: A cornerstone of the partnership is the co-creation of the "10 Insights on Climate Sciences," a globally relevant publication that will include a dedicated Africa-specific adaptation. The Africa-specific insights will also incorporate local knowledge systems and traditional practices, ensuring that the findings are culturally relevant and actionable for African stakeholders.
  2.  Joint Fundraising and Knowledge-Sharing Initiatives: Recognizing the importance of financial sustainability, the two Hubs will collaborate on joint fundraising efforts to support their shared goals. This will include identifying and applying for grants, partnerships with philanthropic organizations, and engagement with the private sector. The Hubs will also work to establish a knowledge-sharing platform to exchange best practices, tools, and methodologies for effective resource mobilization and project implementation.
  3.  Establishment of a Liaison Forum for Global Research Networks: To strengthen global connectivity, the partnership will create a liaison forum that brings together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from across the Global Research Networks (GRNs). This forum will serve as a platform for coordinating interdisciplinary research, fostering collaboration on transboundary issues, and amplifying the voices of African scientists in international sustainability discussions.
  4.  Supporting African Sustainability Science Clusters to Enhance Research and Innovation across Africa: The collaboration will prioritise the promotion of research and innovation by supporting the activities of the African sustainability science clusters, early- and mid-career researchers, and sustainability science community in Africa to develop scalable solutions to climate and sustainability challenges on the continent. The Sweden Hub’s expertise in green technology and sustainable urban development will be leveraged to support African innovators in creating locally relevant solutions.
  5.  Strengthening Financial Resources Through Shared Expertise: By pooling their expertise and resources, the Africa and Sweden Hubs aim to enhance their financial sustainability and operational efficiency. This will involve developing joint proposals for large-scale funding opportunities, sharing administrative best practices, and exploring revenue-generating activities such as training programs and consultancy services.

The partnership between the Future Earth Africa Hub and the Future Earth Sweden Hub is envisioned as a model for North-South collaboration in sustainability science. By combining their strengths, the Hubs aim to amplify the impact of sustainability science research in Africa and globally; foster inclusive and equitable participation of African researchers in international sustainability initiatives; drive transformative change by integrating scientific knowledge with policy and practice.; and build resilience to climate change and promote sustainable development across Africa.
