On Friday, May 9th, French 1 students embarked on an enriching semester excursion to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), hosted at Alliance française. The day began with a “Bla Bla” activity, where students were paired with French-speaking individuals to practice their language skills. This interactive session allowed students to engage in conversation, using the vocabulary they had learned throughout the term, enhancing their fluency and confidence in French.

Following the activity, a brief presentation was given about Alliance française its mission, goals, and the ways it supports language learners. The students gained valuable insight into how the organisation helps improve French language skills through cultural programs, language courses, and community events.

The group then enjoyed a screening of the French film "Rosalie." The film depicted a woman who faced social rejection due to her excessive body hair and beard. It was a powerful exploration of beauty standards and societal judgment. “The movie was great, I guess. It really opens up space for interpretation,” said Elisa, one of the students. The movie sparked thoughtful discussion and allowed students to reflect on societal norms through a French cultural lens.

After the film, the students took a short break on the beach in Summer Strand, where they had the opportunity to reflect on their semester as a whole. This moment also served as a chance to bond with classmates on a more personal level, strengthening friendships and creating lasting memories.

The excursion concluded with a brief visit to Nelson Mandela University NMU), which the students thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, the day was both educational and enjoyable, offering a unique opportunity for cultural immersion, language practice, and personal connection among the students.
