Message from the Group Fitness Section Head

Section Head:         Natasha Boel

Group fitness is a great section to be involved in due to the motivational group environment, the high-energy music, as well as the variety of exercise classes that are offered. Forget monotonous workouts and routines and instead become part of a section that is fun, dynamic and exciting for everyone! Everyday there will be at least 5 classes offered which cater to your exercise needs. These classes will include cardio workouts such as step and taebo, purely toning classes where you really ‘feel-the-burn’, dance inspired Zumba and cardio classes and even pilates and yoga to strengthen your mind and body. This section will continue to improve with new equipment and qualified instructors and assistants who are ready to help you get fit and healthy.

Things to look forward to in this section:

  • Group Fitness 6 hour Marathon Monday 21 September 2015,

  • Outdoor boot camp classes,

  • Exercise and nutrition talks with Exercise Smart,

  • Shoe Collection Charity Drive 2-27 November 2015

Don’t get left behind – get moving and stay healthy!

Group Fitness Q&A

Q:  Are there classes during public holidays?

A:   Yes, unless otherwise stated by means of a notice or email,  all classes will continue as normal on public holidays.

Q:  What happens to classes during load shedding and water outages?

A:  Classes still continue during load shedding as we have a battery operated sound system, however, during winter months the late or early morning classes (06:15 and 18:15) will be cancelled due to inadequate lighting or at the discretion of the instructor. When water has been off for a considerable amount of time classes will be cancelled. Notices will be placed outside the hall informing you of the status of the situation.

Q:  What happens if an instructor does not arrive for a class and it is subsequently cancelled?

A:   You will be allowed access to the main gym to exercise in the event of this happening.

Q:  I would like to become a Group Fitness Instructor or Assistant next year, what do I do?

A:   At the end of every year, applications for these position will be open to students. You will be interviewed and trained by relevant people.  Keep checking the notice board and website for these applications and/or speak to the section manager.

Q:  How do I know if I can attend an Intermediate or Advanced class?

A:   You are welcome to attend ANY class regardless of the level stipulated. In some cases the level will be important for choreographed classes, such as Step, but others can be modified to suit your personal fitness and strength levels.

Q:  What do I need to bring with me for a class?

A:   You need to bring a towel, water bottle, student card and wear proper training gear

Q:  If I am late for a class (even by only 5 minutes) can I still join if the class has already started?

A:   If a class has already begun you may not join as this is both disruptive to the instructor and members but is also a safety measure to prevent injuries of participants who arrive late and miss the beginning warm up session (as is the case in most sports).
