The Employment Equity Plan

Section 20 (1) of the Employment Equity Act no of 1998 requires a designated employer to develop and implement an Employment Equity plan. The University has employed more than 150 staff members which makes it a designated employer therefore it must have a plan as a guiding instrument for the implementation of Employment Equity. The plan is used as a map of how and when the University is going to reach its Employment Equity targets.

The University’s current EE Plan runs from 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2015. The new plan must be approved by the institution before the expiry of the old plan.

 

The process for determining the new EE Plan for the period 1 September 2015 is underway as follows:

a)    Departments and Divisions are required to set their own EE Plans. These various plans will then be collated for the Faculty EE Plans and the institutional EE Plan;

b)    Guides have been compiled to assist HoDs and managers:

  1. EE Guide for Heads of Academic Departments 
  2. EE Guide for Support staff Heads and managers 

c)     These guides and documentation relevant to each department was sent from HR in the week of the 19th of January 2015;

d)    Presentations for HoDs will also be held on the 26th of January 2015 and 30th of January 2015;

e)    A consultative process is to be followed in determining these departmental EE Plans;

f)     The deadline for departmental plans to be sent to HR is 16 March 2015;

g)    The Equity and Institutional Culture Committee and HR will also be

h)    The first draft plan will be tabled with the Equity and Institutional Culture Committee (this is the committee that approves the EE Plan) at its May 2015 meeting;

i)      The Institutional Forum, Senate and Council will have an opportunity to comment on the plan. This input will be considered by the E+IC Committee;

j)     The final plan will be tabled with the E+IC Committee at its 22 July 2015 meeting;

k)    Thereafter the Plan must be submitted to the Department of Labour.
