Richard Maradze is a management scientist who is currently completing his M. Comm degree at Rhodes University, Grahamstown. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Richard holds a BSS (Organisational Psychology & Management) as well as a BSS honors in Management (finance, strategy, marketing, human resource) qualification.  His M. Comm focuses on Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs in South Africa, specifically, how they manage to overcome challenges faced as they transition from being a start-up, to being operational.  This investigation aims to address how the prospective immigrant entrepreneurs respond to the challenges they have to overcome with the sole aim of operating sustainable enterprises. This inquiry is set in an environment characterised by high SMME failure rates where most small businesses do not survive the first year. Given the observed success of Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs in South Africa, this study seeks to add value by proposing recommendations that will improve success rates of new small entities in the retail sector.
