KICK-OFF! NALSU's 2025 Vuyisile Mini Workers School

Over 35 delegates arrived in Makhanda for this lively five-day event hosted by the Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU) at Rhodes University. They came from the big federations -- COSATU, FEUDSA, NACTU, SAFTU -- and from other working-class formations: the Independent Komani Residents Association (iKORA), the Phakamani Siyephambili farmworkers and farm-dwellers committee movement, and the Unemployed People's Movement (UPM).

The school was opened by Mr Xolile Mini, eldest son of Vuyisile Mini, Kathrin Meissner from NALSU's partners, the FES South Africa, and NALSU's Prof Lucien van der Walt. The theme? "Can The Centre Hold? Prospects for South African Economic Revival in a Changing World Order."

The historic role of unions and other working-class movements as forces for change and dignity underlines the importance of reflective engagement with these issues, and of creating spaces for deliberation, capacity-building and critical evaluation. The 2025 Vuyisile Mini Workers School will provide an opportunity to draw on the experiences of organised workers across the Eastern Cape in relation to the broader national and global context and experiences.

The school is named after Vuyisile Mini, trade unionist and anti-apartheid activist, who was hanged by the apartheid government in 1964.

ABOUT NALSU: Based in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, NALSU is engaged in policy, research, and workers' education, has a democratic, non-sectarian, non-aligned and pluralist practice, and active relations with a range of advocacy, labour and research organisations. We are named in honour of Dr Neil Aggett, union organiser and medical doctor who died in 1982 in an apartheid jail after enduring brutality and torture.
