Dr John Reynolds is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology at Rhodes University, where he teaches at postgraduate level and in the department’s worker education programme, which is coordinated by the Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU). John established NALSU in the Institute of Social and Economic Research at Rhodes University in 2012, and served as its Head until 2019, when the unit was relocated to the Department of Sociology and a new Director was elected. Prior to the establishment of NALSU, John accumulated over twenty years of applied research, policy and facilitation experience. His work covered areas such as provincial growth and development planning, local economic development, sector and enterprise development, human resource development planning, institutional/organisational development, health systems, water resource management, water services, land reform, livelihoods, communications management, social impact assessments, and public participation facilitation. John has worked in the Eastern Cape since 2000. In that time, he has built on his previous experience in the larger South and Southern Africa to focus increasingly on social and economic development research and facilitation, policy support, and critical reflection on the limits of policy challenge in the South African state. His work in the Eastern Cape has included substantive work on the Eastern Cape Provincial Growth and Development Plan 2004-2014 (on contract to the United Nations Development Programme) and the establishment and implementation of the Thina Sinako Provincial Local Economic Development Support Programme (financed by the European Union in partnership with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government).

John’s research interests include the state, power relations and democratic practice, social and economic systems, and development planning. Although he has authored numerous research and policy reports (including NALSU research reports), he delayed work on academic publications until after the completion of his PhD in 2014, with the exception of academic publications arising from his Honours and Master’s theses – the former in the international journal Social Science and Medicine. John’s book, Development Planning in South Africa: Provincial Policy and State Power in the Eastern Cape, was published by Zed Books, London, in 2018, and an edited book for which he is the lead editor – titled Race, Class and the Post-Apartheid Democratic State – was published by UKZN Press in 2019.
