Community Maths Buzz

We have provided a number of single or double page spreads of mathematical activities with parent guidance in our local press. These could be freely shared in other local forums to stimulate broader community participation in mathematics.

Background to the supplements

2012

In 2012, we introduced a weekly numeracy ‘Fun with Maths’ page which was incorporated into the existing ‘Ukufunda’ section of the local Grahamstown newspaper Grocotts Mail.

The aim of this page was to encourage learners, parents and teachers to engage learners with various numeracy concepts in a fun way that differs from traditional teaching approaches.

The series kicked off with a Grocotts interview with Prof Graven and Debbie Stott on the 5th June 2012 and ran until November 2012.

2013

Again, in 2013, we contributed exciting, educational and fun resources to Grocotts on the UKUFUNDA page. The feature was published under the UKUFUNDA banner and was entitled "Make It Count".

We had periodic series throughout the year in April, June/July and October. Still focussing on younger children from pre-school until about Grade 5, we had a full page spread and showcased news from the mathematical community who are working with this age group in Grahamstown.

We also offered themed resources that families could do with younger children.
