STRIKE BY NEHAWU

NEHAWU has given notice that it intends to embark on protected Industrial Action (a strike) from Monday, the 3rd of August, and it could last a few days.

This is related to the recent support staff salary adjustment.

During the strike, the University may not bring casual labour onto the campus, and we will therefore need HELP in the preparation and serving of meals in the dining halls and clean-up afterwards, during the following shift times:

  1. 06h20 to 08h30
  2. 08h30 to 11h00
  3. 11h00 to 14h30

If you are willing to assist, please send your name, contact details, and the preferred shift and date (assuming the strike lasts for a few days) to: Waldette Lombard at w.lombard@(at)ru.ac.za (046 603 8606 or 079 699 0628) or Heidi Strauss at h.strauss(at)ru.ac.za (046 603 8128). Please do this as soon as possible.

The Oppidan Dining Hall will continue to operate and all teaching activities will continue as normal, but lecture venues and practical rooms will not be cleaned. Security, Housekeeping and Catering Contingency Plans have been put in place, so life in residences should not be unduly disrupted.

During this lawful industrial action:

  1. Please respect the right of workers to strike, and do not interfere with or antagonise anyone who is participating in such industrial action.
  2. If you are unhappy with any incident or conduct, please report this to the Registrar of Finance & Operations, Mr Ross Marriner (046-6038123 or email r.marriner@ru.ac.za)
  3. No staff member or student may give any official statement to the press about the strike on behalf of the University.

If you have any queries, please contact Mr Marriner (see 2 above) .

The University respects the rights of workers on industrial action. In return the University expects that its rights as an employer are also observed.
