MESSAGE FROM SRC 2010

Dear returning students

We, the SRC, hope that everyone is enjoying the last few days of their vacation and is preparing themselves for the new academic year. We would also like to congratulate everyone on their exam results and to those who are writing supplement exams we wish you all the luck.

Last year the SRC discussed the annual street party that traditionally ended O-week and we have decided to change many aspects of the party ranging from name, venue and time. It will be moved to the 12th of Febuary which is the Friday of the first week of term. This has been done in order to encourage the right atmosphere in O-week that is not centered around the drunken debauchery and lapsed memories of the night before. The entire O-week programme for the first years revolves around responsible behavior and drinking and therefore it would be counter productive to have the event during O-week. By changing the time of the bash it will also allow a sense of student unity where the first years can party it up with you.

Due to the time shift of the party, the event will be hosted on the Great Field for security and safety issues relating to an expected growth of the student body and to prevent repeats of some of the problems experienced in previous years. Of course the one move to shift it one week later has also necessitated the additional move to the Great Field since the SAB Miller equipment would blockade Prince Alfred Street during lecture time.

Please also note that this year's O-week events will be for freshmen only, with no returning students allowed entrance.

If you have any grievances on this decision please let us know.

Kind Regards
