Real Women. Real Violence. Ambush Theatre

Women’s Week is coming up next week and one of the events that will be taking place is an Ambush Theatre-style event entitled – Real Women, Real Violence on Wednesday 4 August.

Despite the best efforts of many, women abuse remains an issue for ALL WOMEN. The sense of immunity a woman might feel because of her class, race or other is a fallacy. There is no ‘kind’ of woman to whom abuse cannot happen. In the interests of reinforcing this message*, we invite you take part in an ambush theatre event – Real Women, Real Violence.

On Wednesday 4 August, at 12h05, we will be walking from Eden Grove to the Bicycle lawns where we will stand until 13h10, when we will return to Eden Grove. The difference is that instead of simply being ourselves, we will be dressing as the ‘roles’ women play in our society. Each participant will have make up done for them with bruises, cuts, etc. A statistic representing the abuse that ‘woman’ experiences will be printed on a poster hanging around her neck.

If you are interested in taking part in this action, please email Lara (l.vanlelyveld@ru.ac.za) by 2 August 2010. Please consider giving up 2 hours of your time to combat the myth that abuse happens to a ‘type’ of woman – it is something that affects us all.

Thank you in advance for joining the action!

*Women abuse is a problem that ALL people have to face, regardless of their sex or gender. However, in this particular action we are focussing on how women abuse is not something that can be assigned to a particular ‘category’ of women, but is rather experienced across the spectrum.
