Speakers:
Prof David Crane is a professor of practice at Syracuse University College of Law, USA, since 2006. Prior to that time he was a distinguished visiting professor for the 2005 academic year. From 2002-2005 he was the founding Chief Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, an international war crimes tribunal, appointed to that position by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. During his tenure, he indicted, among others, the then-President of Liberia, Charles Taylor
Prof L Juma, Law Faculty, Rhodes University teaches in the areas of property law, customary law and public international law. His research interests include: human rights law, international humanitarian law and peace and conflict studies. He has presented papers at local and international conferences and published widely in these fields. Currently, he serves in the Editorial Board of African Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law and is also a member of the Network of University Teachers of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in Southern Africa and Indian Ocean Region. Prof Juma received his Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi, Masters of Law (LLM) from the University of Pennsylvania (USA), Masters of Arts (MA) in peace studies from the University of Notre Dame (USA) and Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of Fort Hare (RSA).
Ms Mutsa Mangezi, International Committee of Red Cross. Born in Zimbabwe in 1981, Mutsa completed her tertiary education in South Africa. She holds Bachelor of Arts (2002), Bachelor of Laws (2004) and Master of Laws (2007) degrees from Rhodes University, South Africa. In 2008, she completed her articles of clerkship and went on to practice human rights law. Thereafter she was appointed as a lecturer at Rhodes University where she lectured public international law and clinical law. During this time, she was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of University Legal Aid Institutions of South Africa. She has also served on various working groups that assess the impact of law on the poor and marginalised, including refugees and migrants. In 2012 she joined the International Committee of the Red Cross, Pretoria delegation as a Legal Officer where she specialises in international law.
