Wordfest 2017 will launch the book: No Longer Whispering to Power: The Tenure of Thuli Madonsela by Thandeka Gqubule. The book will focus on the highlights of the former Public Protector during the seven-year term she served in office. It will look at some of the cases she took on and her labours at enforcing the role and authority of her office in light of vehement and sustained vilification and resistance. It will also look at Madonsela’s formative years and her life in the legal profession. The book title is loosely based on a Venda tradition where a Makhadzi (translated Aunt) quietly whispers truth to the leader. The office of the Public Protector did the same through quiet interactions with organs of state to exact accountability over the use and control of state resources on behalf of the public.
