Russell Bruns completed his MFA (with distinction) at Rhodes University in 2013 and his Bachelor of Fine Art (with distinction) in 2011. In 2013 Bruns’s body of work entitled New Dorp City was published in Versal: The Amsterdam Literary and Arts Journal. His interests lie in how staged photography has been used to create discourse. His MFA body of work was a photographic interrogation of repressed privilege within a South African context, and his thesis was entitled Deconstructing the Constructed Image: From the Pictorial to Post-Apartheid Photography. Bruns was one of ten finalists in the Sony World Photography Student Focus Awards 2014. His MFA supervisors were Dr Kylie Thomas (theory) and Brent Meistre (practice).
