Professor Ying Cheng

 Research Associate

Professor Ying Cheng (Research Associate with the NRF/DST SARChI research programme in Geopolitics and the Arts of Africa, Fine Art Department, Rhodes University, South Africa.) is an assistant professor in the Department of Asian and African Languages and Cultures, Peking University, China. Her research interests include popular art practices and urban youth in Africa, theatre and performance arts in African cities, arts of the Global South, and cultural interactions between China and Africa. She teaches Culture and Society in Africa, African Theatre and Performance, Frontiers of African Literary and Cultural Studies.

Cheng received her PhD from the Department of Languages and Cultures in Africa, SOAS, University of London in 2017. Her PhD project was about the transformation of popular culture in urban Nigeria. In recent years, she has published in journals including Journal of African Culture Studies, African Theatre, Annual Review of African Studies in China, and China Book Review. In 2018 she received the Lagos Studies Association (LSA) Best Doctoral Thesis in Lagos Studies Award.
