Maurice Mbikayi

In 2011 the Visual and Performing Arts of Africa (ViPAA) research team invited Maurice Mbikayi (left) to Grahamstown as a guest artist. He produced the public performance ‘Intersection’ (right) for the Arts Lounge programme at the National Arts Festival, and participated in the roundtable discussion on constructions of ‘strangers’ in the context of Afrophobia.

“My work is related to identity and history, and seeks to interrogate people's origins and boundaries – how these can be renegotiated and recontextualised in different socio-political environments. I also investigate the impacts of contemporary technology on humanity, especially Africans” (Mbikayi) (Photos: Ruth Simbao).
