100 tongues debut at festival

Grahamstown based vocal duo Shirilaulu presents their debut Festival production "100 Tongues", showcasing music from several different languages including Shona, Finnish, Afrikaans, German and French.

The name "Shirilaulu" is a combination of "shiri" - the Shona word for bird - and "laulu" - the Finnish word for song, or singing.

Shirilaulu was founded in 2009 and recently gave their debut recital in Grahamstown. The group consists of Rhodes University music students Yemurai Matibe (soprano), Lotta Matambo (mezzo-soprano) and Peter Cartwright (piano).

Matibe is in her third year of a BMus degree, Matambo is completing her Masters degree in music and Cartwright is in his 4th year of a BMus degree.

The Rhodes University Music Department has sponsored some of Shirilaulu’s productions costs and their debut recital in May was held at Beethoven Room, Rhodes University.

The group will continue to work together after Festival and are currently planning performances in Hogsback, as well as a concert tour to Zimbabwe in December this year.

Their works include Puccini, Mozart, Delibes, Mendelssohn and Langenhoven, as well as an arrangement by local composer Gareth Walwyn.
