Most expencive female artist’s work on exhibition Art Tourism

The work of the internationally famous painter Marlene Dumas is currently on exhibition at the new Edwards Fine Art Gallery in Shop 24 at the Xanadu X-ing Shopping Centre.

Marlene Dumas is a South African born (1953) artist who lives and works in Amsterdam, in Holland. Marlene was raised on her family’s farm in Kuilsriver region and her home language was Afrikaans.
She studied art at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. In 1976 she left South Africa on a scholarship to study at the Atelier 63 in Haarlem, Holland and 36 years later is still living in the country’s capital, Amsterdam.

In 2008, Standard Bank Art Gallery curated an exhibition “ Intimate Relations”, cataloguing her life’s work.

In 2010, she was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Faculty of Humanities, Doctor of Laws honoris causa from Rhodes University.

In 2011 she was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy honoris causa by the University of Stellenbosch, and in 2012, she was awarded the Dutch state prize for the arts “The Johannes Vermeer Award”.

She works mainly with oil on canvas and ink on paper. Work by the artist is held in public collections of various museums internationally. In 2008, Her painting “The Visitor” sold for USD 5 843 000 at Sotheby’s, making Dumas’ work the most expensive of any living female artist.
