• Ziyanda's profile

My name is Ziyanda Ntlokwana, born and bred in Grahamstown. I’ve been studying at Rhodes since 2011 reading for my Bachelor of Social Science degree, with majors in Political and international studies and Industrial Sociology.

I am currently doing my honours in industrial Sociology. My research area is the casualization of workers in higher education institutions more specifically Rhodes University. With the numerous subsidy cuts throughout the years, most higher education institutions have restructured in a manner that is profit driven and seeks to minimise costs. This restructuring, in most cases, has resulted in the casualization or privatisation of labour. In light of this, my research aims at investigating workers responses to casualization, and the implications of this on trade unionism at Rhodes.
