Snippets of some young people's stories in Makhanda. It is life stories like these that will soon be captured in our digital sotorytelling lab sponsored by the EU Erasmus+ Project, led by Glasgow Caledonian University.

Aphelele Jezi from Ntsika High School was mentored, as part of the 9/10s programme, for his Grade 12 year. His National Senior Certificate results at the end of 2017 were outstanding – he was the top-performing learner from an HDI in the entire Sarah Baartman District. These results enabled Aphelele to successfully apply for the prestigious Moshal Scholarship. He started his BSc at Rhodes in 2018 and is progressing well. Aphelele is now a mentor in the mentoring programme and is giving back to his former school in this way.

Sibabalwe Zwakala did Psychology 1 as part of the Bridging Programme while he was at the GADRA Matric School (GMS) in 2017. He got a Distinction for Psychology 1 and he also got a distinction for Religion Studies at GMS. ‘Zakes’ as he is known, was accepted at Rhodes University in 2018 to do a BA mainstream course. He excelled in his first-year and also played a role as Tutor for the next year of GMS Bridging students doing Psychology 1. ‘Zakes’ has a bright future ahead of him and is likely to graduate with a BA in the minimum 3-years having benefited from the Bridging Programme. He then plans to go on to do his LLB and qualify as a Lawyer.

Yonela Cekwana (LHS of photo) was mentored by Dr Westaway as part of the 9/10s programme at Ntsika High School in 2015. She went to HISS in 2016 and improved her level of pass from a Diploma- to a Bachelor-level. She was accepted into the BA Extended studies programme at Rhodes in 2017. Yonela is progressing well and is now in her third year of her BA degree and is on track to graduate in 2020.
