This past weekend, one of our flagship initiatives, Nine Tenths Mentoring Programme, held its midyear mentor training. The training’s aim was to recap on the year’s activities and prepare mentors for the remaining mentee contact sessions for the year.
Dr Ashley Westaway from GADRA Education shared an analysis of this year’s mentees’ June exam results. He also noted that out of 13 mentees from Ntsika Secondary School that have applied to study at Rhodes in 2020, 8 have been accepted.
Last year the programme produced 83 bachelor passes and 49 diploma passes, which massively contributed to the highest number of bachelor passes that Makhanda public schools have ever received. The total number of bachelor passes received by Makhanda made a historical figure of 234. On top of the highest number of bachelor passes, Makhanda also saw the highest number of overall passes and the highest number of pupils who wrote matric in 2018 (increased by 11%).
This year the programme also saw an increase in the number or mentees and mentors. In 2018 there were 90 mentors and 168 mentees. This year there are 125 mentors and 210 mentees.
