On September 25, the Vice Chancellor of Rhodes University, Prof. Sizwe Mabizela, along with Deans of Faculties, funders, and key stakeholders in community engagement in Makhanda, gathered to celebrate excellence in community development at the annual Community Engagement (CE) Awards.
This year marked the 13th edition of the awards ceremony, which showcased an exceptional number of quality nominations. Among the highlights was the presentation of the coveted Gold Award to 12 outstanding finalists.
The Student Volunteer of the Year award was jointly presented to Tiisetso Nhlapo and Takudzwa Makuwa, to reconigse their exceptional dedication to community service and leadership. Takudzwa and Tiisetso have worked closely on various CE projects over the years.
Takudzwa Makuwa, affectionately known as Boots, has developed an impressive portfolio in community engagement since he began volunteering with BuddingQ in 2020. His commitment to service has reached new heights this year, earning him recognition as one of Africa's Top 50 Most Impactful Young Leaders. Additionally, Boots was selected for a Transdisciplinary International Learning Laboratory in Canada, participated in the Geneva Challenge essay competition, and co-authored two research papers focused on participatory democracy and youth empowerment. A passionate advocate for community engagement, he frequently shares insights through various media platforms and collaborates with student societies at Rhodes University.
Tiisetso Nhlapo has been involved in the BuddingQ Early Literacy Programme since 2020. Her participation in an accredited online course has led her to become a mentor and master trainer for new volunteers at several local primary schools. This year, Tiisetso was selected to participate in a Service Learning exchange in Rwanda, presented at the International CE Conference, and is co-authoring a paper on community engagement and democracy. She has also played a vital role in organising a student-led community Imbizo and holds leadership positions in the Law Society at Rhodes University.

The Community Partner of the Year award was awarded to the Assumption Development Centre for their outstanding contributions to the community. Finalists for this honour included Talking Technology and Meals After School, with the RU Preschool also recognised for their valuable work in early childhood development and impactful partnership with student organisations.
This year’s Society or Sports Club of the Year award went to the Toastmasters Club for their continued excellence in CE and partnerships with local schools. The finalists in this category were Kings and Queens Chess and Shotokan Karate, who both had a packed year of deep activities and relationship-building with their partners.
The Residence or Hall of the Year award honoured Drostdy Hall as the winner, with Nelson Mandela Hall and Cullen Bowles recognised as finalists. The number of students involved in Residence and Hall activies this year has been remarkable. The SRC Community Engagement counsellor, Kholofelo Koko and her team have contributed immensely to this space.
Lian May was celebrated as the Researcher of the Year for his exceptional contributions to engaged scholarship and commitment to impactful research. Although their were a few nominations for this award, Lian's nomination stood out, particularly for its participatory nature and relevance.
The annual CE Awards continue to shine a light on the remarkable achievements of individuals and organisations committed to improving their communities and leading positive change in Makhanda.
