RUCE was very excited to learn that one of their team, Claire McCann was selected to participate in the APORDE programme in Pretoria in September. Only 30 people are selected annually for this high level training programme.

The African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE) is a training programme in development economics which aims to build capacity in economics and economic policymaking. The course is run for two weeks and consists of lectures and seminars taught by leading international and African economists. APORDE’s aim is to train policymakers, researchers, academics and civil society representatives from Africa and other developing countries. The programme emerged from the need to stimulate training in development theory and policy that is critical of the mainstream orthodox approach and to drive industrial policy solutions from within developing countries themselves.

APORDE covers essential topics in development economics, including structural change, industrial policy, rural poverty, inequality and financialisation. Lectures will equip participants with key information pertaining to both mainstream and critical approaches. The programme will mostly consist of daytime lectures, as well as a number of shorter evening talks and debates.
