Info regarding 2016 supplementary exams

Clarification with regard to the awarding of supplementary and aegrotat examinations for the November 2015 examination period.

These examinations will take place over 10 days from the 25th January - 5th February 2016.

In a university circular it was noted that "In acknowledgement that the disruption has impacted on study time, supplementary examinations will be available for all courses on application", that "No supplementary examination fee will be levied", and that "Results of the supplementary examination will be awarded in percentages and not with Pass or Fail symbols". This concession does not apply to part-time, off-campus Education students (BEd, BEd (Hons), MEd coursework students).

Please note that supplementary exams apply to any full-time student registered in any faculty in any academic year that:

a) Writes any exam in November (this includes practical exams and rewrites) and
b) That the student applies to the Registrar to write the supplementary examination.

The requirement to apply for the examination is administrative only - we simply need to know which examinations require new question papers in January/February. All applications will be approved as there is a no minimum or maximum mark for the supplementary examinations. Supplementary exams are therefore also available to those students who wish to improve on their November marks.

By contrast, aegrotat examinations are quite different and have an examination fee attached. They are governed by Rule G.39 of the calendar (http://www.ru.ac.za/…/Rhodes%20University%20Calendar%202015…) and are typically awarded with a medical certificate.

A system to apply for the supplementary examinations will be set in place by the Registrar’s Division in due course. The closing date for these supplementary examination applications will be 13 January 2016. Once you have submitted your application to write a supplementary exam please allow 48 hours for it to be processed and then check your academic record to confirm that your application has been received and processed and that all is in order.

Also please keep checking the online supplementary examination timetable for final dates and venues. The timetable will be released in December, but will change as the applications are processed.
