CAPE TOWN - Rhodes University is bringing in a facilitator to mediate in the on-going fees dispute with students and management.
The institution has been hit by protests since last week which saw lectures being disrupted by students calling for the implementation of free tertiary education.
Students arrested during the demonstrations were released on a warning in the Grahamstown Magistrates Court yesterday, on condition they return today.
Rhodes vice-chancellor Sizwe Mabizela says disputes should be resolved through discussions.
“We have Judge Yvonne Mokgoro coming to see if she can play a role in facilitating those discussions. In the end, it will have to be trough discussions, dialogue and engagements that we find each other.”
Mabizela says the institution wants to shift the burden of funding from poor parents to other sources.
He adds that management will continue to put pressure on government to increase funding for universities.
