The period of probation for academics is usually three years. Provided that all the probation requirements are met, this period may be shortened as follows:

  • For prospective staff members: in discussion with the Director: HR at the time of the acceptance of employment; and
  • For current staff members: in discussion with the Head of Department (HoD) and Dean who will make a recommendation to the Director: HR.

Probation requirements are outlined in the contract of employment. As a new staff member you will receive a letter notifying you of the probation process and requirements.

Academic leave is usually only approved after a period of three years at the institution. Personal promotion is usually applied for after confirmation of appointment, following probation.
