The SciTV website and its inserts have won the inaugural student category of Siemens Profile Awards 2008 which aims to “reward excellence in Science and Technology Journalism”.
It is the first time that Siemens ran a student category for the awards, which is seen as the main science award for African media. TV lecturer Paul Hills will be going to Johannesburg next week to receive the award as well as R15, 000 prize money. “Rather than buying an island in the Caribbean, as I usually do, we'll be using the prize money to develop Science & Technology Television Journalism,” quips Paul.
“The primary objective of the Profile Awards programme is to develop, nurture and advance quality science and technology reporting. More importantly however, the focus is on facilitating the empowerment of African communities through the extension of knowledge.” (www.profileawards.co.za).
