New accredited course for JMS

The new Post-Graduate Diploma of Economics Journalism (PGDipEJ) is now officially accredited. The PGDipEJ, designed and funded by the Centre of Economics Journalism in Africa (CEJA) at Rhodes University can now be offered to students with a degree or requisite prior learning.

The aim of the course is to educate working journalists about business, finance and coverage of the macro-economy, and give them the knowledge and skill to apply what they learn at the workplace, enabling them to become "reflective practioners".

For the past year, would-be PGDipEJ students have been completing the modules of this two-year, part-time Post-Grad diploma as short courses. This year the modules will also be offered as stand-alone courses.

"As short courses the modules, because they are designed to meet the highest standards of university teaching, have proved a valuable addition to our portfolio," remarks CEJA director Reg Rumney. He adds that the course is unique in Africa, and groundbreaking in the way it goes beyond training to impart the kind "powerful knowledge" that a university education affords students.

The Journalism and Media Studies School will be recruiting students for the 2011 PGDipEJ in the course of this year.
