Rhodes JMS 1970 – 2010, we are in our 40th year of existence. Let us celebrate this in a big way through our alumni scholarship fund in its 5th year anniversary. This year we aim to award 20 new alumni scholarships to the value of R100 000.
Ten scholarships of R5 000 each will be doubled by Telkom to reach our target for 2010. The first scholarship – dubbed Ultimate Kiffness – has been contributed by 12 alumni who each donated R500.
Alumni Clare Thomas, Tudor Caradoc-Davies and Samantha Reinders came up with the name and the idea during last year’s JMS reunion in Cape Town. They say: “As previous Rhodes students, we love the idea of being able to help a brilliant, passionate, and talented student who is deserving of a scholarship to continue his or her studies. If we can help them to not only establish themselves in the media industry, but to add it, to make a statement, make a difference and make the world think, then we’ve made a worthwhile contribution.”
Of the R6 000 raised, R5 000 will be awarded to a first year JMS student in August. The remaining R1 000 will give the winner an opportunity to travel to Cape Town and meet the alumni during the October reunion.
You can join these alumni in making a difference by starting a new 2010 scholarship as an individual @R5 000, a group of two @R2 500, a group of five @R1 000 or a group of ten @R500. Create a new scholarship in any name you like, to give tribute to a person or to promote a certain aspect of journalism you are involved in.
