Founding Head of School retires

Anthony Giffard, the first Head of the Rhodes University, School of Journalism and Media Studies has retired.

Giffard dedicated more than 40 years of his life to the study of journalism and communications. 

His career in journalism (in South Africa and London), has seen him working as a reporter, editor and copy editor for the SABC, London Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and other educational institutions.

He received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1968.

Giffard then returned home to South Africa spending 10 years in Grahamstown, getting the School of Journalism and Media Studies on ‘its feet’.

In 1979 Giffard was offered a professorship at the University of Washington's, School of Communication, where he has since been involved in one sphere or another.

The School of Journalism and Media Studies wishes him well in his retirement.
