Bye, bye Robert

Robert Brand, Pearson Chair of Economics Journalism, is leaving the School of Journalism and Media Studies after six years.

He is on his way to Cape Town, after being appointed as a correspondent for Bloomberg News – the global financial news and information provider, where he will be writing about capital markets and economics.

When asked what he will miss the most about the School he said, “I'll miss the stimulating intellectual environment of Rhodes University as well as the range and diversity of opinions and interests among staff in our School and the robust debates – to put it mildly – that often resulted from the expression of those views and ideas.” “I'll also miss the excellent library, the campus with its lovely indigenous trees and gardens and the African Media Matrix, which is a most pleasant working environment.”

Robert’s fondest memories of the School have to do with “producing something of value, such as research – either by way of helping a Masters student complete a thesis or publishing a journal article – and raising money to establish the Centre for Economics Journalism in Africa.”

Robert wished he spent more time exploring the Eastern Cape. “Grahamstown is situated in such a diverse region with a rich history stretching back to the beginning of humankind. There is so much to see, learn and do and I'm afraid my family and I only scratched the surface.”

“Become journalists. Be the best journalists you can be. Guard the reputation and credibility of your profession by producing journalism that is truthful, fearless, original, creative and socially-minded,” is Robert’s advice to current student and future graduates.

The School wishes Robert well in his new adventure.
