JMS alumni, Laura Wener, Paul Harris, Nontobeko Sibisi and Kyla Herrmannsen have been nominated for the prestigious 2011 Siemens Profile Award, which rewards excellence in science and technology journalism in Africa.
All four were nominated for student television productions, completed in the last year of their Bachelor of Journalism degree in 2010.
Wener and Harris are nominated for their documentary entitled, 'The Real Paper Chase' which investigated the impact that Rhodes University's paper consumption and wastage has on the environment – giving suggestions on greener alternatives.
Sibisi and Hermannsen are nominated for their documentary entitled, 'The FIFA 2010 Stadium in PE - Who really wins?' Their documentary looked at stadia built for the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup and whether this would benefit the average South African. They also questioned if money used to build the stadia should have been better spent on rolling-out service delivery that ordinary South Africans are in desperate need of?
As this is a pan African award, the awards ceremony is being held in Doha, Qatar. JMS television lecturer Alette Schoon, who was the executive producer of the documentaries, has been invited to attend the ceremony on behalf of our alumni. The awards ceremony takes place on 28 June 2011.
JMS alumni have won this award for the past two years and we look forward to making this a hat-trick.
