The Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management is a NQF 8 level qualification run by the Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership based at Rhodes University. It is offered part-time by distance learning over two years, with a two hour online, interactive seminar once a week from 6pm-8pm. To create the space for working media professionals to enrol in this postgraduate diploma, there are no-in person classes.
The PDMM is intended to provide specialised knowledge to people entering or working in the media industry who wish to succeed in middle management positions within the public, commercial or community media sectors. The course is also suitable for spokespeople and communications professionals in the private sector, non-governmental organisations and in government. It also aims to provide students with the foundational knowledge, understandings and work competencies to start out as media entrepreneurs.
The main purpose of the PDMM is to educate competent media managers and leaders who can operate in volatile and changeable conditions that exist in the 21st century digital media space. The strength of this qualification is that students engage with relevant theories and principles that provide them with lenses to understand and critically analyse appropriate media leadership and management practices.
The theoretical knowledge that students engage with through readings, online tasks and discussions, assessment tasks, and the portfolio all contribute to a graduate with a holistic, relevant and diverse knowledge base, skills and dispositions to be able to pursue the next level of study in related academic fields such as a Master’s degree in journalism and/or in media studies and/or in media management.
These students could also embark -- as some of the past full-time students have already done at City University, Cardiff University and the London School of Economics -- on MBA degrees in a range of academic specialisms such as in Finance, Marketing and Advertising, and Management of Digital Content.
The core modules of the PDMM are:
- Research Methods
- Media Governance, Leadership and Advocacy
- Media Law and Ethics
- Media Ownership and Economics
- People Management and the New World of Work
The PDMM also offers these electives (students choose two):
- Media Management and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Digital Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- Media Marketing and Advertising
At the end of Year Two, all students will be required to complete a Research Project in the format of a mini-thesis on any topic covered in the course.
