The Rhodes University Jazz Band:
The Rhodes University Jazz Band is comprised of registered music students as well as volunteers from other departments of the university. The focus of the ensemble is to provide a platform for the study and performance of various jazz styles and techniques of improvisation. Repertoire ranges from South African and American jazz standards to contemporary styles and original compositions. The band performs regularly throughout the year at various university and public events.

Band leader bio:
Chris Thorpe has performed, recorded and toured with various musical groups ranging from jazz, latin and funk to rock, soul and pop. He recently completed his Masters in Jazz Performance at Rhodes University and holds an Honours in Jazz Performance from the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. He is a previous member of the South African National Youth Big Band and the South African National Schools Jazz Band. Having performed and taught music in Cape Town and London, Chris is now based in Makhanda where he teaches at DSG/ St Andrews College and at Rhodes University and the University of Fort Hare.
