Prof Webster is Research Professor in the Society, Work and Development Institute
(SWOP) at the University of the Witwatersrand and director of the Chris Hani Institute. He
is Editor-in-Chief of the Global Labour Journal, and co-ordinates a range of research
projects on the world of work. He is currently completing a book on Labour after
Globalization: Old and New sources of workers’ power. Prof Webster will show how
Marikana and the uprising of farm workers in De Doorns is not an uniquely South African
phenomenon; it is part of a global challenge to increasing inequality across the globe.
