Dear friends, colleagues and comrades,

The Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU) at Rhodes University, Makhanda, South Africa wishes all people safety and health in this difficult period.

1. We call for solidarity and generosity, and for just and equitable access to safety and treatment for the working class and poor. Personal responsibility, self-organisation and civil society efforts are essential to mitigating and resolving the crisis.

2. We are honoured that NALSU's Professor Mike Rogan is part of the Presidential Task Team looking into social policy measures to assist informal workers in this difficult period in our country's history.

3. We will be working from home during the lock-down, and remain contactable online and in-touch. Feel free to contact our Project Manager, Mr Valance Wessels at 0825057904 or by email at v.wessels@ru.ac.za  or our Director, Professor Lucien van der Walt at 073-146-0871 or by email at l.vanderwalt@ru.ac.za

4. Our worker education programmes, including the "History and Debates in the Workers' Movement" short course for metalworkers' unions -- a module in the larger "Policy, Theory and Research for Labour Movements" programme we run with merSETA backing -- are postponed, not cancelled.

5. Events in our Labour Studies Seminar Series -- including events with unions and with other labour service organisations, backed for 2020 by the South Africa office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) -- are postponed, not cancelled.

We thank you for understanding, and trust that you will experience kindness, mercy and solidarity in these times.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.

With best wishes,
Professor Lucien van der Walt
