Rhodes University signs the varsity sports agreement

This was followed by a signing ceremony where Sue Smailes signed the Varsity Sports Agreement on behalf of Rhodes University, with Francois Pienaar signing on behalf of Varsity Sports and ASEM.

Asked as to why it took this long for Rhodes University to sign, Mandla Gagayi said “Rhodes University had few principle issues that we wanted to be addressed before signing the Agreement. We also wanted to be fully sure that our participation in Varsity Sports does not compromise the academic project. All these matters have been addressed and that is why we are here today.”

“The first sport from Rhodes University to participate in Varsity Sports is men’s hockey and we hope that we will grow the pool of participants to include the likes of Beach Volleyball, 7’s rugby, Football, and Netball. However, all these sports will have to prove themselves through USSA qualification process”.
