Activism and Transformation Councillor, Tanaka Makaure

Tanaka Makaure is a Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Law and Sociology. Born in Zimbabwe as the first child with two siblings to parents who are the breadwinners of their families, resulting in her becoming the eldest of multiple younger cousins whom she loves and cares for as her own biological siblings. Tanaka is a selfless blood donor and a volunteer of Zimpact (Zimbabwe drunk & dangerous driving awareness). Due to the high expectations consistent with her position in her family and the hardships of Zimbabwe’s economic situation she aims to transform those around her within the best of her ability, drawing upon her first-hand experience of unpredictable and dynamic environments.

"The reality of the burden that awaits me has never escaped my mind and works as a constant driver that motivates me to work harder and smarter to attain the best for my future so l can not only uplift but create a trickle-down chain that aids and develops those who follow – after all, what is success if it does not bring joy and love to those around you?"

Tanaka is an open-minded, strong-willed and compassionate Capricorn who felt humbled by her election. Her favourite quote by Howard Thurman reads '“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”   Inspired by the faithfulness of the sunrise to light the earth as a beacon of hope that fuels her daily to aim for active transformation with her reach and stretches beyond the visible limits through her appreciation of a life lived through love. She hopes to activate a transformative spirit through the aid of her portfolio with fellow council members and the Rhodes student body to make our university a better place one deep breath at a time.
