In coming into office I had to organize societies sign up. I received a list of all the societies that had booked a spot for sign ups and the equipment they would require from the previous councilor. This was given to me on the 15^th of February.

• A few societies had not been captured and were not included on the layout of the field and I had to re-structure it. A few other societies had not booked and came on the day. We provided space for them and everything was set properly
• On the 20^th of February I sent out a post through Facebook and email (Via Hall Administrators) explaining to the student body the terms and conditions of signing to a society and/or sport.
• I met with Mr Templeton at CPU to organize security guards that were going to be at the entrance and exit of the venue (Great Field). We had a small issue of short notice that was quickly resolved.
• On the 22^nd I called facilities to get an update on the equipment we had booked for the event and they confirmed that they would be arriving at 14pm
• Some societies had requested a power source and I went to fetch them at the electricity department. We had a shortage but the societies were able to share the extension cords.
• On the day, councilors were designated at different parts of the venue to help with both set up and signing out of equipment. Media Councilor, Vice-president, Projects manager, International Affairs councilor and Academic Councilor.
• Some of the tables were not sent back to their original venues but none of the equipment was lost

 

 

The SRC Finance Admin, Ms Lumka Shelle and Mr Eric Ofei called for a brief meeting with the society chairpersons on the 20^th of February at 18h30 in the Council Chambers. This meeting was to brief the society chairpersons on how sign up forms were going to be filled, purchase orders and to inform them about the training that was going to be on Saturday the 24^th of February.

Society Chairs training was on Saturday the 24^th at the Council Chambers in the morning from 9am. THE FOLLOWING WERE COVERED

• Student Governance at Rhodes University
• Leadership at Rhodes University and University Support Structures/Resources Available to Students
• Community Engagement Projects
• Financial protocol / Societies Finances

During this meeting the Executive Society Chairs committee was elected which will be part of student parliament.

 

On Tuesday the 10^th of April a LOC meeting was convened to discuss Inter-varsity 2018. It is scheduled to happen on from the 9^th to the 11^th of August and is hosted by Nelson Mandela University in the Summerstrand Sports Campus. However, the after-party will be hosted in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. An amount of R100 000, according to the intervarsity constitution, is required from the Universities that are participating and double the amount is required to be contributed by the host institution. The discussions are currently on hold due to the reluctance of Rhodes University towards the assurance of the safety of students throughout the event and are requesting the LOC to account for the standard contribution amount from the institutions taking part.

 

The 2018 USSA National AGM was held in Pretoria, beginning on the 20^th of April and ended on the 22^nd of April. There was an introduction of the USSA website update and how athletes are required to register online. This was introduced to prevent fraudulent Participation by non-students and students not within the age restriction. Universities proposed motions for the changes/additions to the USSA constitution.

The international office in conjunction with the office of the Sports and Societies Councilor hosted the first annual student world games. Four Sport codes were included in the student world game which were Soccer, 8-ball Pool, Netball and Archery. Archery unfortunately pulled out on the day and the prize money was redirected to the other sport codes. The first round of the games started on Saturday the 19^th of May and the finals were Sunday the 20^th as well as the Prize giving. All finalists were required to learn and sing the national anthem of the country they were representing.

The Sports & Societies Councilor handed the cash prizes personally to the winners through the facilitators that were designated for each sport.
