SRC Branding and O-Week

A gazebo, two banners, and a PVC banner were designed as part of the SRC brand and marketing. These have been used at multiple events for SRC exposure and to notify people that the SRC was there. The week before Orientation Week I designed posters for certain events that the SRC was going to be hosting for 1st years during O-Week. During this time, it was noted that this is the time that Students can get to know their SRC for 2019 so we decided to host a Purple Thursday (7 February 2019) on the Steve Biko Lawns which was titled as #GetToKnowYourSRC and it was a successful event, there were games to be played and pictures were taken and uploaded on social media platforms.

Some of my functions during O-Week were to Capture events together with Media Team, designing marketing merchandise for the SRC, help with finding sponsors for certain events, delegated to Eden Grove to assist with registration for 1st years and attend to my academic commitments. Working together with the Media Team pictures that were taken were carefully selected, edited and uploaded onto our social media pages. During the time working at Eden Grove as part of the delegation process done by Secretary General (SG) I used that opportunity to promote the SRC social media pages, for example, the Instagram page, Facebook page, website, and the Twitter page. For the Instagram page, we manage to gain 400 new follows during O-Week.

I was also delegated to approach sponsors for events that were being held during O-Week. Together the Vice President (VP) we approached Mugg and Bean and they gave us vouchers to use during the Amazing Race event.

Part of my functions during O-Week were to sit in a meeting to discuss the use of the screens at the Dining Halls. I was notified that the Communication's Division is looking for content and they invite the students to send them content that they might want to share with fellow students. It was also mentioned that the SRC can use the screens as their form of advertising events which might be happening throughout the year.

9 February – March 2019

My main priority during this period I was working on getting more exposure for the Lalelani SRC Media Show which is broadcasted live on RMR 89.7FM on Tuesdays. This has been my priority because this is where the students can keep the SRC held accountable and get important updates about what is and will be happening throughout the year. I will also be making this a platform for students to advertise their businesses and get in touch with other students and businesses who might be in the same market. So far we have had 3 weeks of the radio show on RMR 89.7 FM broadcasted every Tuesday at 9 pm.

Another thing that I have been working on as Media Councillor is the Rhodes University SRC website. I took council photos and uploaded them to the website. I can safely say the website is updated and with it a link to send emails to each councillor. Another project that I am looking to develop is getting the Rhodes University SRC twitter account verified and the Instagram account as well. My other objective for the year is to promote wellness, I will be doing this by posting weekly motivational messages on the SRC page, to motivate the student body. If any issues are raised with this, I will look into them and decide whether I stop the initiative or not. This will be discussed at a council meeting before the term ends.
