Samantha Munro, a Masters student in the Department of Economics and Economic History, was invited to present a paper on her research at the Water Footprint Symposium/Workshop at the University of the Free State on the 3-4 September 2014. The symposium/workshop formed part of a Water Research Commission Project that was allocated to the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of the Free State. It was an opportunity for Sam and Professor Gavin Fraser to meet two leading researchers in the field of water footprint research. They were Dr Ashok Chapagain from the Water Footprint Network (WFN) at University of Twente, who was part of the WFN from its outset, and Dr Brad Ridoutt of the CSIRO in Australia who works on Life Cycle Assessment and is the Australian representative on the International Organization for Standardization who have brought out a regulation ISO 14046:2014 that specifies principles, requirements and guidelines related to water footprint assessment of products, processes and organizations based on life cycle assessment.
