The Glencore-Xstrata Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs
The Glencore-Xstrata Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides competitive doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships to undertake research in mineral resource-related topics on the African continent. The program was initially funded by a generous industry endowment from Xstrata (now Glencore) made to the Department of Geology in 2005. The initiative was spearheaded by the late Prof John Moore.
The primary obligation of doctoral and postdoctoral fellows is the creation of knowledge and the publication of results in reputable international science journals. Glencore-Xstrata Research Fellows may be involved in the supervision of junior postgraduate students in the Department of Geology but do not have formal teaching obligations. Various academic development courses are offered at Rhodes University.
Interested candidates for doctoral studies or postdoctoral research must contact potential supervisors or hosts in the Department of Geology in order to discuss potential research topics, supervisory capacity, research funding, physical resources and project feasibility, or contact the manager of the program, Steffen Büttner.
Applications are accepted at any time, but the fiscal rules of the programs limit the number of available scholarships at any given time. The fellowship is granted on merit of the applicant and the strength of the research proposal. The fellowships are renewable up to four years for doctoral and three years for postdoctoral research fellows. Further details and the application forms are available on request from the programs’ manager.
