Alumni Demelza Bush, Lindsay Callaghan, Sarah Schäfer and Sophie Smith – 2009 photojournalism graduates – are holding the JMS flag high in Belgium this month.
De Buren, a Belgian cultural organisation, has selected work from their fourth-year photojournalism portfolios to be featured in an exhibition entitled ‘Waiting and watching: South African moments’ – showcasing new talent from South Africa.
Each alumnus has been sponsored to exhibit 24 photographs as well as various multimedia pieces. The work on display portrays the life and faces of people who normally go through life without being noticed.
De Buren is flying them to Brussels for the opening of the exhibition and will introduce them to contemporary and historic work on exhibition in Belgium and in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
This is a major achievement for the photographers concerned and an exciting development in the further recognition of the School beyond the borders of South Africa.
