Health journalist, Mia Malan is the newest member of the School of Journalism and Media Studies - having been appointed as lecturer within the Discovery Centre for Health Journalism.

Mia will be teaching Honours students journalism skills in the second semester of 2011 - mostly focusing on health journalism writing as well as helping to teach the fourth-term Health Journalism intensive course. 

Mia was a Knight Foundation African Health Journalism Fellow from 2009 to 2011, training journalists at the Mail&Guardian and Soweto TV. Prior to this, she was based in Washington DC for three years working for the Internews Network as their Senior Health Journalism Advisor. She has also trained health journalists in Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, Haiti, Thailand, Iran and India and was the national health correspondent for the SABC and health producer for Special Assignment.

Mia has won numerous awards including best director and best documentary at the Baltimore Women's Film Festival in 2008 for her documentary, ‘My Dead Husband’s Land’ - a film about the changing culture of the Luos in Nyanza, Kenya. She was the CNN African Journalist of the year in the Radio Category in 2000 and was also the winner of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Health Journalism in South Africa in 1998.

She holds a Masters Degree in Science Journalism from Stellenbosch University.
