This year on Mandela Day, 18 July 2014, some of the staff members decided to do their 67 minutes for Madiba.
Some of the staff members decided to spend their lunch hour on Mandela Day, in the streets of Grahamstown handing out sandwiches, dried fruit and cupcakes to those less-fortunate.

On Friday 26 July staff members from the School of Journalism and Media Studies descended on the St Mary’s Development Care Centre with large iron pots of bean and vegetable soup to combat the morning’s winter chill, as part of the Rhodes University community engagement initiative to give 67 minutes of your time for Nelson Mandela day. On 18 March 2013 a photography auction was held to raise funds for veteran war photographer John Liebenberg. South African photographers donated their work to the cause, among others Rhodes University photojournalism lecturer Harold Gess and resident Mellon Senior Scholar in the School of Journalism and Media Studies Cedric Nunn.
